It was ever thus unfortunately...
i'm not saying it was never like this. i am saying Here It Is. x janelle
It is shit - seeing those pictures from the DCR is heartbreaking. I find shopping malls heartbreaking too - just in a different way.
thanks for visiting lulu labonne! xx janelle

Maddening. Your contrast is so vivid. I can't believe that this is just business as usual in the 21st century.
A very interesting contrast janelle. Of course, it's not a zero sum game. That is, the shopping mall does not add misery elsewhere. I know you are not saying that but all of us tend to fall into that trap.
I remember as a child being told to eat up x y and z because children were starving in China. Gosh, was I causing that? And in particular was I causing that because I didn't want to eat x y and z?
Somehow Africa needs to get its act together. How I don't know. But the sooner Africans recognise they are doing this to each other, and not because of x y or z, the better.
Shopping malls are scary places, not the most frightening places in the world, by a long shot, though.
How are we supposed to hold the ends of the spectrum? Both ends at the same time I mean?
Thanks for this.
yeah ernest i know! indeed they do need to get their bloody acts together.
nevertheless, this consumerism with no conscience, this ridiculous avarice, is an extraordinary backdrop against people who have nothing. thousands, millions. somehow, it doesn't tally. it makes me feel terribly uncomfortable. don't we have enough shopping malls and restaurants already?? so reya, exactly.
Depressing. The news for the past week has all been about 2 stupid comedians nto being very funny and causing some offence (Jonathan Ross & Russell Brand)somehow that is deemed more news worthy than either the violence in the Congo; global financial meltdown or the US elections!
Malls have come to represent fast-paced consumerism - and they embody the core of American foreign policy - that is mass produced goods at affordable prices - for everyone, the American Way. Profiteering via credit cards and fancy clothes and gifts.
The Congo horror has at it's roots, both ideology and profiteering. There's fortunes to be made once the ruthless violence is over. The earth will be attacked and precious metals will be removed and all the destruction of people and land will get pushed into history books.
Consumerism will once again become the spear point and there will be more malls for everyone.
hmmm i know mud. but boo hiss. can;t be helped. swifly moving on... x
wow. thanks bill! x janelle
This makes me want to weep. Can you imagine what it must feel like to be in that situation?
